Okay, so, I was checking out this Yankees vs. Seattle Mariners game the other day. I was curious about how the players performed. So I started digging around for the player stats.
First, I looked for some general info about the teams’ head-to-head history. I found that they’ve played a bunch of times since 1993 – 191 games to be exact. Turns out, the Yankees have won more of those games, 109 compared to the Mariners’ 82. And the Yankees tend to score more runs too, averaging 5.1 per game, while the Mariners average 4.3.
Then, I got into the specific player stats for this recent game. I noticed a few standout players from the Mariners. This one guy, Jay Buhner, apparently used to play for both the Yankees and the Mariners back in the day. And Ken Griffey Jr. has hit the most home runs ever for the Mariners, with 417. Edgar Martinez isn’t far behind, with 309 home runs.
On the Yankees’ side, I learned that Derek Jeter has the most career hits for the team, a whopping 3,465! Lou Gehrig comes in second with a lot of hits as well. It was pretty interesting to see how these legends stack up.
I also checked out some of the pitching stats. For the Mariners, this pitcher named Logan Gilbert seems to be a big deal. They were saying he’s a “dominant force”, but I didn’t get to dive too deep into his numbers during this particular match.
- Total games played between the two teams since 1993: 191
- Seattle Mariners wins: 82
- New York Yankees wins: 109
- Most career home runs for Seattle Mariners: Ken Griffey Jr. (417)
- Most career hits for New York Yankees: Derek Jeter (3,465)
All in all, it was a fun little research project. Comparing the teams’ overall records and then looking at individual player performances gave me a better appreciation for the game. It’s always cool to see how the current players compare to the legends of the past.
