Oh, let me tell ya, there’s plenty of golfers out there who have never won a major, but still they’s the best of the best. Some folks might not know their names like they know Tiger Woods or Jack Nicklaus, but these fellas sure know how to swing a club. Take Lee Westwood for instance. Now that man, he’s got 44 wins to his name, but never snagged a major championship. Ain’t that somethin’? Folks always say he’s one of the best golfers to never win a major, and I reckon they ain’t wrong. Funny thing is, he’s also one of the few who’s been ranked number one in the world, but no major in his trophy case. Only other feller to do that is Luke Donald, but he ain’t won one either.
Now, don’t go thinkin’ that just ‘cause these folks didn’t win a big one that they don’t got skill. Oh no, they’re as good as anyone out there. Take Colin Montgomery for example. That feller, he ruled the European Tour for years. But when it came to the big Majors, well, he just couldn’t seem to get over the hump. There’s a story, y’know, that he had the US Open in his hands, but then he messed up on the last hole. Ouch. Must’ve hurt, that’s for sure.
Then there’s Matt Kuchar. Now, Kuchar, he’s been around a long time. Most folks don’t know this, but he ended the 2022-2023 season as the highest-earning PGA Tour player who ain’t won a major yet. You’d think with all that money and fame, he’d’ve gotten one by now. But nope, still no major win. He came real close in 2017 though. He finished second in the Open Championship, so close, but no cigar. Still, that man’s got talent, no doubt about it.
One thing about these golfers who don’t win Majors though, they sure make a lot of money. They may not get the shiny trophies, but they’re playin’ that game for keeps, and it shows. Take Viktor Hovland, for instance. He ain’t won a major yet either, but he’s right up there in the rankings. Last I checked, he’s the highest-ranked player without a major. Don’t know about you, but that seems mighty impressive to me.
Now, some folks might wonder, how does a player like that keep goin’, year after year, playin’ at the top but never gettin’ a major? Well, I reckon it’s all about the drive. These fellas love the game. It’s in their blood, like a farmer loves his crops. They know the big wins could come, and maybe they’ll keep swingin’ ‘til they get it right. You ever hear about the golfers who almost had it, but somethin’ went wrong? They just come back stronger. It’s the spirit of the game, y’know?
And then, there’s folks like Xander Schauffele. Now, he’s a little younger than some of the others I mentioned, but I’ll tell ya, that boy’s had his fair share of close calls. He didn’t have a major under his belt till 2024, when he won the PGA Championship. Took him long enough, but he finally got there. Sure made the world take notice then. Took a lot of patience, I’d say.
It’s funny, though. When you look at all these fellas, you realize that winning a major don’t necessarily make ya the best. Sometimes, it’s about what you bring to the game, how you handle the pressure, and how long you can keep up the fight. Some of the greatest never won a major, but they’re still remembered for how they played the game.
So, if you ever feel down ‘cause you ain’t got that big win, remember these fellas. They kept goin’, didn’t they? And some of ‘em are still out there, playin’ their hearts out. Ain’t that what matters in the end? Whether you win a major or not, it’s about the love of the game and the fight to the finish.
