Right, so someone asked me about that eye thing I dealt with a while back. Honestly, it’s one of those things you don’t really talk about much, you know? Bit gross, bit freaky. But here’s the rundown of how it all went down for me.

It started super weirdly. Just felt like… something was itchy? Not really itchy, more like a tickle, but inside my eye. You know that feeling when an eyelash gets stuck? Kinda like that, but deeper in. I kept rubbing it, splashed water, thought maybe it was just dry eyes or allergies. This went on for a couple of days. I was working on fixing up the back fence at the time, figured maybe some dust got kicked up.
Then came the freaky part.
I was watching TV one night, chilling on the couch. The feeling came back, stronger this time. I went to the bathroom mirror to see if I could spot anything, maybe some redness. And then… I saw it. Something tiny, whitish, like a little thread, just kinda… wiggling. Across the white part of my eye. Man, I tell you, my stomach just dropped. You don’t expect to see things moving in your eyeball. It wasn’t just floating like a floater, it was definitely alive.
Panic mode activated. Seriously, I almost threw up. Called my wife over, she took one look and went white as a sheet. We didn’t even know what to do. Do you call 911 for a worm in your eye? Seemed dramatic, but also… it’s a worm! In your eye!
We ended up going to the urgent care clinic first thing the next morning. Trying to explain it to the receptionist was awkward as hell. “Yeah, hi, I think… uh… I think there’s a worm in my eye?” Got some strange looks, lemme tell ya.
Getting it sorted
The doctor there was pretty calm, thankfully. Shone a bright light, took a good long look. He confirmed it. Said it looked like some kind of parasitic worm. He mentioned a specific name, something like ‘Loa loa’? Said it’s usually from certain parts of Africa, asked if I’d traveled. I remembered that trip a few years back, volunteering for that building project. Guess I picked up an unwanted souvenir.
Here’s the process, wasn’t too bad actually, just super unsettling:
- Numbing eye drops. Lots of ’em. That was a weird sensation on its own.
- Doctor used some fine tweezers under magnification.
- He basically had to gently grab the little sucker and pull it out.
- Felt a tiny, tiny pulling sensation. More weird than painful.
And just like that, it was out. He put it in a little vial. Grossest little thing I’ve ever seen come out of my body. Gave me some antibiotic eye drops and told me to watch out for any more symptoms, maybe see an infectious disease specialist just in case, which I did later. Thankfully, it seemed to be a one-off critter.
The weirdest part? After it was gone, my eye felt instantly better. But for weeks afterwards, every little twitch or floater I saw made me jump. Felt phantom wiggles, you know? Took a while to get over the mental side of it. It makes you think about all the tiny invisible stuff out there. Kinda puts things in perspective, doesn’t it? Made me appreciate just having normal, boring, worm-free eyes.

So yeah, that was my adventure with the eye worm. Not something I’d recommend. Check your eyes, people. And maybe think twice about souvenirs from exotic places.
