Okay, so I’ve been craving some serious alone time, you know, just to unplug and recharge. I decided to go for a “wilderness retreat,” thinking it would be all peaceful and zen. Turns out, it was… eventually. But the journey to get there was a whole other story.

The Prep Work
First, I picked a spot. Not too far, but remote enough that I wouldn’t be bumping into crowds of hikers. I found this state park with some secluded campsites, perfect!
Then came the gear. I dusted off my old tent, made sure my sleeping bag wasn’t full of spiders, and packed enough food to survive a small apocalypse. I’m talking trail mix, canned beans, the works. I even threw in a book, thinking I’d spend hours reading by the campfire. (Spoiler alert: that didn’t happen.)
The “Adventure” Begins
The drive was fine, a little bumpy on the dirt roads, but nothing my trusty old car couldn’t handle. Getting to the campsite, though? That’s where things got interesting.
I followed the park map, or at least I thought I did. Turns out, I took a wrong turn somewhere and ended up on this overgrown path that looked like it hadn’t seen a human in decades. I kept going, figuring I’d eventually find my way back. (Another spoiler: I didn’t.)
- Branches were scraping the sides of my car.
- I’m pretty sure I ran over a small bush.
- My “relaxing retreat” was quickly turning into an off-road rally.
Lost and Found (Eventually)
After what felt like hours, I finally admitted defeat. I was lost. Seriously lost. The sun was starting to set, and my phone had zero signal. Panic started to set in.
But then, I remembered something my grandpa used to say: “When you’re lost, stay put.” So, I did. I parked the car, took a deep breath, and tried to calm down.
I ate some trail mix, drank some water, and just listened to the sounds of the forest. And you know what? It was actually kind of… peaceful. The birds were chirping, the wind was rustling through the trees, and for the first time in a long time, I felt truly relaxed.
The Rewards
The next morning, I woke up to the most amazing sunrise. I made some coffee on my little camping stove, and just sat there, soaking it all in. It was like the wilderness was rewarding me for my earlier struggles.

Eventually, I managed to find my way back to the main road (turns out I wasn’t that far off after all). I even made it to my actual campsite, which was just as secluded and beautiful as I’d hoped.
So, yeah, my “wilderness retreat” wasn’t exactly what I expected. It was more challenging, more adventurous, and definitely more rewarding. I learned that sometimes, getting lost is the best way to find yourself. And I discovered that even a can of beans can taste pretty amazing when you’re surrounded by nothing but nature.
