Getting Started with This Whole Thing
Alright, so I kept seeing stuff about this ‘Chad Gable shot’ online, mostly clips of the wrestler guy pulling off some crazy moves. Looked impressive, you know? Like those suplexes he does, real smooth but powerful. Got me thinking, how hard could it really be? Famous last words, right? Anyway, I decided I’d give it a go myself. Not like, in a real match or anything crazy, just trying to understand the movement, the mechanics of it in my own space.

Clearing the Deck and First Tries
First thing, I needed room. Cleared out the garage a bit, put down some old mats I had lying around. Didn’t want to crack my head open on the concrete. Then I pulled up some videos. Watched Gable doing his thing over and over. Paused it, rewound it, trying to break down the steps. Looked simple enough on screen: grab, lift, arch, throw. Easy peasy.
So, I grabbed a sturdy old duffel bag I filled with some clothes and rags – my practice dummy. Not exactly the same weight or shape as a person, but safer, yeah? Tried the initial setup. The footwork felt weird. Getting the grip felt awkward. First actual attempt to lift… well, let’s just say the bag didn’t go flying like in the videos. It barely left the ground. My back immediately told me this was maybe not the smartest idea I’d ever had.
The Messy Middle – Lots of Grunting
Okay, so brute force wasn’t the answer. Went back to the videos. Noticed it was less about raw strength and more about technique. Leverage, timing, using your hips. Things you don’t really appreciate until you try it and fail miserably.
So, I focused on the smaller parts:
- Getting the stance right. Lower center of gravity.
- Practicing the grip, finding a solid hold.
- Trying the hip thrust motion without even lifting, just getting that explosive movement down.
Did this for a while. Lots of awkward shuffling, grunting, and the duffel bag just kind of flopping around. Felt pretty dumb, honestly. There were a few times I nearly tripped over my own feet. Definitely wasn’t looking like an Olympian out there. More like a clumsy bear trying to dance.
Getting Somewhere… Kind Of
After a bunch of tries, things started to click just a tiny bit. I managed a couple of lifts where the bag actually got some air. Wasn’t pretty, mind you. Probably looked more like I was heaving garbage than executing a wrestling move. But it was progress! The key really seemed to be that hip drive, syncing it perfectly with the arm pull and the back arch.
It’s way harder than it looks. The coordination needed is intense. You gotta have everything fire off at the exact same moment. My respect for guys like Gable went way up. They make it look effortless, but man, the power and technique involved is something else.
So, did I master the ‘Chad Gable shot’? Heck no. Not even close. But I got a feel for it. Pushed myself, learned something, and mostly avoided serious injury. That’s a win in my book. Definitely sticking to watching from the couch, though. My back thanked me for stopping.
