Okay, so I wanted to get a handle on the Akron Zips depth chart the other day. You know how it is, maybe you’re prepping for the next game, or just curious about who’s lining up where. It’s not always as straightforward as you’d think.

My First Steps
First thing I usually do is hit up the official athletics website for the team. Seemed logical, right? I navigated over to the football section. I spent a bit of time clicking around there.
- Looked under the ‘Roster’ tab – that just gave me the full list of players, numbers, positions, basic stuff. Not really a depth chart.
- Checked for ‘News’ or ‘Game Notes’. Sometimes they release PDF notes before a game, and sometimes that includes a two-deep. Found some old notes, but nothing super current for what I needed right then.
- Scanned the main football page. No clear link screaming ‘Depth Chart’. A little frustrating.
Digging Deeper
Alright, the official site wasn’t giving me the easy answer. So, my next move was to broaden the search. I fired up my browser and started hitting the usual search engines.
I tried terms like:
- “Akron Zips football depth chart”
- “Akron depth chart 2024” (or whatever the current year is)
- “Zips two deep”
This brought up a mix of results. Some were from big sports news sites. Problem is, a lot of those major sites focus more on the Power 5 teams, you know? Their Akron info can be outdated or just plain wrong sometimes. Or worse, hidden behind a paywall. Not paying for that.
Checking Fan Buzz
When the main sources aren’t cutting it, I sometimes check out fan forums or message boards dedicated to the team or the conference. You gotta take it with a grain of salt, obviously, but sometimes you find dedicated fans who piece things together from practice reports or coach interviews. I browsed a couple, found some discussion threads. People were making educated guesses, arguing about who should be starting. It gives you some idea, but it’s not official.
Social Media & Beat Writers
Thought about social media too. Checked the team’s official football account. Mostly hype videos and score updates. Then I tried looking for local sports reporters or beat writers who cover the Zips. Sometimes they tweet out observations from practice or hint at the depth chart. Found a couple of guys, scrolled through their feeds. Again, bits and pieces, but no complete picture laid out nicely.
The Usual Conclusion
Honestly, what I often find, and what happened again this time, is that a truly reliable, up-to-the-minute depth chart is hardest to find between games. Coaches like to keep that stuff close to the vest.
Often, the most accurate version only really becomes clear right before kickoff. Either it’s officially released in the final game notes just before the game, or you figure it out by watching who takes the first snaps during the broadcast. So, my whole process ended up being a reminder: sometimes you just gotta wait until game day, or piece together the clues yourself from all these different spots. It’s a bit of legwork, but that’s part of following a team closely, I guess.
