So, the name Mike Riley came up the other day, and it got me thinking, where has that guy actually coached? I remember hearing his name connected to a few different teams over the years, but I couldn’t quite place them all. Curiosity got the better of me, so I decided to sit down and actually look it up.

My process was pretty straightforward, nothing fancy. I just popped open my computer and went to my favorite search engine. My first search was simple, something like “Mike Riley coach history” or “teams Mike Riley coached”. You know how it is, just typing in what comes to mind.
The results started flowing in pretty quickly. It wasn’t too hard to find lists and articles talking about his career. I started jotting down the names as I saw them confirmed across a couple of sources, just to make sure I wasn’t grabbing bad info.
Here’s What I Found
It turns out he’s been around quite a bit, more places than I initially remembered. Here’s the list I put together from my digging:
- USC: Saw him mentioned here early in his career, looked like different assistant roles.
- Winnipeg Blue Bombers: Yep, he spent time up in the CFL. That one I kind of remembered.
- Oregon State Beavers: This was a big one. He had a couple of different stints there as Head Coach. Probably what he’s most known for by many college football fans.
- San Antonio Riders: A bit obscure, this was from the old World League (WLAF).
- San Diego Chargers: He definitely spent time in the NFL as a Head Coach here.
- New Orleans Saints: Also saw him listed as an assistant coach, specifically working with offense I think, for the Saints.
- Nebraska Cornhuskers: Another major college Head Coach job. A big program, that one.
- Seattle Dragons: More recently, he was involved with the XFL reboot.
- New Jersey Generals: And even more recently, the USFL.
Putting it Together
So yeah, that was my little project. Just started with a simple question that popped into my head, did a quick search online, and pieced together the information. It’s interesting to see the path someone takes, bouncing between college, the NFL, and even other leagues like the CFL, WLAF, XFL, and USFL. Quite a journey. It didn’t take long, maybe 15-20 minutes of focused searching and reading snippets here and there. Glad I looked it up, satisfies the curiosity!
