Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about this fella, Dirk Nowitzki. They talk about his height a lot, you know? Folks are always goin’ on and on about how tall he is.
Big Dirk, they call him. And lemme tell ya, he is a big fella. They say he’s seven foot tall. That’s like, taller than my barn door, I reckon. Can you imagine? Seven feet! Makes my old man look like a little pipsqueak, and he wasn’t a small fella himself.
Now, I ain’t never seen him in person, mind you. Just on that there TV thingy. But even on that little screen, he looks like he could reach the moon. He’s all long legs and arms, like one of them praying mantises we used to get in the garden, only much, much bigger. And he’s got this funny lookin’ shot, kinda leans back, but that ball goes in the hoop every time. Seems like.
- They say he’s from Germany. That’s way over yonder, across the big water. Don’t know much about that place, but they sure can grow ‘em tall over there, I guess.
- And he played this here basketball game. Not like the kind we used to play in the schoolyard, with the old rusty hoop and the flat ball. This is the fancy kind, on TV with all the bright lights and the squeaky shoes.
- Folks say he was real good at it, too. One of the best ever, some say. I wouldn’t know, I ain’t much for watchin’ sports. Too busy workin’ the farm and tendin’ to the chickens and whatnot. But even I heard about Dirk Nowitzki.
They say he played for a long time, too. Like, twenty years or somethin’. That’s a long time to be runnin’ up and down that court, I tell ya. My knees would be shot after a week of that. But he kept on goin’, that big fella. Must have had some strong legs under him, all seven feet of him.
And this fella, they call him Luka somethin’ or other, he was friends with Dirk. They played together for a bit, I think. Luka’s a good player too, but he ain’t as tall as Dirk. Nobody is, it seems.
Now, some folks argue about his height, you know? Like folks do. They say maybe he ain’t exactly seven foot, maybe he’s a little less. But what does it matter, I say? He’s still taller than most anyone I ever seen, or even heard tell of, and he’s better at that basketball game than anyone around here for sure.
And it ain’t just basketball with this Dirk fella. They say he’s a good man, too. Helps folks out, does charity work and such. That’s important, you know? Bein’ a good person is more important than bein’ tall, even if you’re seven foot tall.
They got all sorts of numbers about him, this Dirk. His points and rebounds and all that fancy stuff. I don’t pay much mind to that. What I know is, he’s a tall fella, a good basketball player, and seems like a decent human being. And that’s good enough for me.
He’s retired now, they say. Can’t be runnin’ up and down that court forever, I guess. Even big fellas like Dirk get old eventually. But folks still remember him, still talk about him. Especially about how tall he is. Seven foot, they say. Big Dirk Nowitzki. A real giant of a man.
So next time you see some young’un playin’ basketball, you remember ol’ Dirk Nowitzki. And you tell ‘em, “Aim high, son. And maybe eat your vegetables, so you can grow tall like that fella from Germany.” Though I reckon seven foot is askin’ for a bit much, even with all the vegetables in the world.
This Dirk fella sounds like a fine gentleman indeed.
