Okay, let me tell you about trying out this ‘living in burrows’ thing in Gray Zone Warfare. Got a bit tired of the usual running around, getting blasted from nowhere. Figured I’d try something different, slow it way down.

Getting Started
First thing, I had to rethink my gear. Ditched the heavy armor, wasn’t planning on facing anyone head-on if I could help it. Grabbed a basic rig, a backpack big enough for essentials but not so big I looked like a walking target. Took a suppressed rifle, nothing too fancy, just something reliable for medium range, maybe scare someone off or take out a lone scavenger if I absolutely had to. Lots of water, some basic food rations, and a good medkit. That was the plan, travel light, stay hidden.
Next up was picking a spot. I deployed near one of the quieter villages, you know the ones, fewer main objectives, mostly just small houses and thick woods around. Didn’t want to be near the major hotspots like the town center or the sawmill. Too much traffic there. My idea was to find a little overlooked building, maybe one slightly off the main paths, and just… exist there for a bit. Use it as a base camp.
Setting Up Shop (Sort Of)
Found this small, two-room shack kinda tucked away behind some overgrown bushes. Perfect. First thing I did was clear it, slowly. Checked every corner, made sure no AI was camping inside. Then I just sat tight for a while. Listened. It’s amazing what you hear when you actually stop moving. Footsteps way off, distant gunfire, the usual jungle sounds. It felt weirdly tense, just sitting there, waiting.
After maybe twenty minutes, felt safe enough to do a quick scout outside. Didn’t go far. Just circled my little shack, checked sightlines. Made sure I knew the quick escape routes if someone stumbled upon me. Didn’t find much loot nearby, just some scraps, but that wasn’t the main goal anyway. The goal was to survive, observe.
- Listen more than shoot: This became my main rule.
- Move slow or not at all: Patience was key.
- Only take what’s needed: Avoided getting greedy with loot.
How It Went Down
Spent a good couple of hours doing this. Mostly it was quiet. Had one AI patrol wander a bit too close. Heard them talking first. Just froze behind a dirty window, watched them pass right by my little hideout. Heart was pounding, not gonna lie. Didn’t shoot. No need. They just walked on.
Later, I heard player gunfire much closer. Sounded like two guys fighting near the edge of the village. I stayed put. Peeking out carefully, I saw one guy go down. The winner started looting. Now, the old me would’ve maybe tried to third-party him. But sticking to the ‘burrow’ plan, I just watched. He took what he wanted and left. He never even came close to my spot. Felt kinda good, actually. Smart, maybe?
Eventually, I had to move. Supplies were getting low, needed water. Packed up my few things and decided to creep towards the nearest extraction point, sticking to the thick tree lines and ditches. It was slow going. Took me ages to cover ground I’d normally sprint across in minutes. But I made it out. Didn’t get much loot, didn’t get any big kills. But I survived the raid, which honestly, felt like a bigger win sometimes in this game.
So, yeah. Living in burrows. It’s a different way to play. Definitely slower, sometimes boring. But it forces you to be aware, to be patient. It’s not for everyone, especially if you’re chasing action. But if you just want to experience the world, survive, maybe complete a task without drawing the entire server onto your head, it kinda works. Might try it again, maybe pick a different kind of ‘burrow’ next time.
