Okay, so people have been asking, or maybe I was just poking around in the settings myself, about this “telemetry” thing in Payday 3. What even is it? Took me a bit to wrap my head around it, not gonna lie.

My First Encounter
I remember messing with the graphics settings, you know, trying to get that smooth framerate during loud heists. Then I stumbled across this toggle: Telemetry. On or Off. My first thought was probably something like, “What in the world is this?” Is it gonna make my game run faster? Slower? Is it spying on me? You know how it goes.
It didn’t really explain itself right there in the menu, which is always a bit annoying. Just the word. So, I did what I usually do when games throw weird terms at me – I started digging around a bit, asked some buddies I heist with.
Figuring it Out (The Simple Version)
Turns out, it’s basically the game sending data back to the developers. Like, information about how you play, what happens in your game sessions. Stuff like:
- Did the game crash? When and maybe why?
- What kind of computer setup are you running? (Helps them figure out performance issues on different hardware).
- How are players getting through heists? Where do they fail?
- Are certain weapons or skills super popular or totally ignored?
- Any weird bugs popping up?
It’s not recording your voice chat or looking through your webcam, don’t worry. It’s anonymous game data, mostly. The idea is that the developers use this info to make the game better. Fix bugs, balance weapons, maybe even figure out what kind of new heists people would like.
Why I Even Bothered Looking Into It
Honestly? I was getting kinda frustrated with some bugs early on. You know, guards spotting you through walls, that kind of stuff. And I remember thinking, “Are they even aware this is happening?” Seeing that telemetry option made me pause.
It reminded me of this other game I played ages ago, an early access thing. It ran terribly, crashed all the time. The devs there were pretty open about needing telemetry data to fix it. We enabled it, reported bugs, and slowly, it actually got better. Took forever, but it got there. Made me think, maybe this Payday 3 telemetry thing is actually important for them to fix the glitches I’m complaining about.
Some folks worry about privacy, and yeah, I get that. Sending data anywhere feels a bit iffy these days. Others worry it might impact performance, sending stuff out while you’re trying to play. I haven’t personally noticed any lag difference with it on or off, but my connection’s pretty decent.
So, What Did I Do?
In the end, I decided to leave it on. My thinking is, I want the game to improve. I want those annoying bugs fixed and the heists to work properly. If sending some anonymous data about my game crashing or a weird AI moment helps them do that faster, then fine. Take it.

If the game was running perfectly, maybe I’d turn it off just on principle. But right now? I feel like they need all the help they can get to iron things out. So yeah, that’s the long and short of it from my perspective. It’s basically a feedback pipeline for the devs, using game data instead of forum posts.
