Okay, so I’ve been diving deep into the world of golf lately, and I got totally hooked on tracking down all the major winners. It started pretty casually, just watching the tournaments and thinking, “I wonder who’s won the most of these things?” Then it turned into a full-blown project.

The Hunt Begins
First, I grabbed a notebook and started jotting down the names of the majors – you know, The Masters, The Open Championship (that’s the British Open for us Yanks), the US Open, and the PGA Championship. Simple enough, right? Wrong! I quickly realized I was in way over my head. There’s, like, a century of history here!
Digging Through the Data
I started by just Googling stuff. “Masters winners,” “US Open champions,” you get the idea. That gave me a bunch of names, but it was a total mess. No real order, just a jumble of information. I needed something more organized.
So, I spent a few evenings going through various sports websites. Some were better than others, but many had little errors. I found myself double-checking and triple-checking everything, because you’d find one site saying one thing and another site saying something slightly different. It was seriously detail work!
Compiling My Own List
- The Masters: This one was relatively easy to track down a consistent list. Jack Nicklaus, obviously, is way up there.
- The Open Championship: This one was tricky because of the whole “British Open” name thing. I kept getting confused! But I eventually sorted it out. Harry Vardon…who knew?
- US Open: Another tough one, with lots of old-timey names I’d never heard of. Willie Anderson, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan… the list goes on!
- PGA Championship: This felt like the “newest” of the majors, even though it’s been around for ages. Walter Hagen and, of course, Jack Nicklaus again, dominated here.
The Results (So Far!)
After all that digging, I finally have a pretty solid list of all the major * took a lot of time to check the names and match them up. I am pretty proud of my messy, hand-written notes. It’s not perfect, and I’m sure there are golf historians out there who could school me, but I feel like I’ve accomplished something. I learned a ton about golf history in the process, which was a cool bonus.
Now, when I watch a major, I have a much better appreciation for the history and the legends who’ve played the game. It is really amazing!
