Okay, so I’ve been messing around with this “sing-along crossword” idea, and I wanted to share how it’s been going. It’s a little rough, but I’m making progress.

I started by thinking about what I actually wanted to make. The basic concept is a crossword puzzle where the clues are song lyrics, and the answers are words or phrases from those same lyrics. I figured that would be a fun twist.
First, I brainstormed some songs.I decided to start my experiment with a simple and familiar song that I can easily recall the lyrics.
Finding a Good Tool
The next big hurdle was figuring out how to actually build the crossword.I started with a quick Google search for some free online crossword makers and find a tool that can help me build the crossword grid.
- I tried a few different online crossword makers. Some were clunky, some were confusing, and some just didn’t work right.
- I eventually landed on one that seemed pretty straightforward. It let me input the answers and clues manually, and it would generate a grid for me. Good enough!
Putting It Together
With a tool in hand, I started plugging in lyrics and answers. I started with that simple song I’d picked * example:
- Clue: “Twinkle, twinkle, little…”
- Answer: STAR
I quickly realized it’s trickier than it sounds! Making sure the words fit together in a grid, and picking lyrics that are obvious enough but not too obvious, that’s a challenge.I messed with grid sizes and layouts.
I spent a good chunk of time just fiddling with the layout, trying to get a decent number of intersecting words. I also discovered that shorter words are your friend in crosswords! Who knew?
Testing, Testing…
Once I had something that resembled a crossword, I tried solving it myself. And, well, it was harder than I expected. Some of the clues I thought were brilliant turned out to be totally obscure. Back to the drawing board!
So, I iterated. I tweaked the clues, swapped out some words, and adjusted the grid a few times. It’s a lot of trial and error.

I haven’t shown it to anyone else yet, but that’s the next step. I’m curious to see if other people can figure it out, or if it’s just a jumbled mess that only makes sense to me.
What I’ve Learned So Far
Even though it’s still a work in progress, I’ve already learned a few things:
- Making crosswords is harder than it looks!
- Choosing the right lyrics is crucial.
- Simple is better, especially when starting out.
I am still going to keep tinkering with it, trying different songs and maybe even trying to make a themed crossword. It’s a fun little project, and it’s definitely stretching my brain in new ways!
