Okay, so today I stumbled upon this thing called “five card or seven card game crossword”. I had no clue what it was, but it sounded intriguing, right? So, I decided to dive in and see what the fuss was all about.
First off, I did a quick search to figure out what it even was. Turns out, it’s basically a crossword puzzle but with a twist – you gotta use clues that relate to either five-card or seven-card poker hands. Sounds simple enough, but I was in for a ride.
Getting Started
I started looking for some examples to get the hang of it. Man, some of those clues were tough! I spent a good chunk of time just trying to understand what they were asking. I mean, who knew there were so many ways to describe poker hands? I found a sample and got started. I tried a couple of crosswords with the clues that were given in the sample, and it was not that bad!
Tackling the Clues
- Tried some basic ones: I started with the easier clues, like ones that just gave you the name of a hand. “Full house” or “Straight flush” – those I could handle.
- Got stumped on the trickier ones: But then came the clues that were like riddles. “A royal gathering” or “Three of a kind plus a pair”. Those took some serious thinking, and a lot of looking up poker hand rankings. I got stuck a lot and had to search a lot. I got a lot of “Ah ha!” moments when I finally cracked them. I even shouted “Yes!” a couple of times!
- Used a poker hand cheat sheet: Yeah, I admit it, I had to pull up a list of poker hands a few times. No shame in that game, right? I do not even play poker!
Making My Own
After I felt like I kinda knew what I was doing, I thought, “Why not try making my own crossword?” Big mistake. It’s way harder than it looks! I got a few clues down. Coming up with clues that were just the right level of difficulty was a real challenge.
- Brainstorming clues: I spent hours just trying to come up with good clues. I’d write one down, then erase it, then write another one. It was a mess.
- Testing it out: I even tried to get my roommate to solve it. Let’s just say, it needed some work. I think he got two answers.
Giving Up (For Now)
So, yeah, I’m not gonna lie, I kinda gave up on making a full crossword. It’s tough! But I did learn a lot about poker hands, and I had some fun trying to solve the ones I found. And when I say I gave up, I actually mean I put it off for now. I still have the half finished one I made, and I think I will complete it someday.
Maybe I’ll try again another day when I’m feeling extra patient. For now, I’m just gonna stick to regular crosswords. Or maybe I’ll actually learn how to play poker.
All in all, it was a fun little experiment. It definitely made my brain work, and I guess that’s always a good thing. If you’re into puzzles and poker, you might enjoy giving it a shot. Just be prepared to be humbled!
I am feeling sleepy now. I think that is enough for today. I will see you guys in the next one. Bye!
