Okay, so the other day I was watching some old tennis highlights, and it got me thinking about the Federer-Sampras rivalry. Or, well, the almost rivalry, since they only played each other once officially. It’s one of those great “what if” scenarios in sports, you know?
I decided I wanted to really dig into that one match they played and maybe compare their overall stats. So I figured the first thing would be to find a good video of the Federer vs Sampras match.
Finding the Match
Fired up my computer. Started with a quick search, just “Federer Sampras head to head”. Of Course, many pages pop up. Found Some good articles and analysis talking about the match.
The match took place at Wimbledon 2001, fourth round. A young Federer beat the legendary Sampras, it marked a shift change.
Deep Dive into Stats
Then, I wanted to see some numbers.
- Checked for service speed. Find out who served the ball faster.
- Look at ace counts. How often did each player win the service.
- Browse some win-loss records of both players.
- Look at Grand Slam titles of both players.
The match was so great!
It’s kind of wild to think that’s the only time they played in a major tournament. A real passing of the torch moment, I guess.
