My Little Experiment with the Strickland Buzz
Okay, so I was watching some UFC stuff, you know, fights, press conferences, the usual rabbit hole. And Sean Strickland kept popping up. Wasn’t really focused on his fighting style this time, weirdly enough. My eyes kept drifting to his hair. Or, well, the lack of it mostly.

It’s basically a buzz cut, right? But sometimes it looks kinda… uneven? Like maybe he does it himself or just doesn’t care too much. And I thought, huh, that’s a look. Super low maintenance. No fuss. Kind of fits his whole vibe, doesn’t it?
So, I got this idea. My own hair was getting annoying, always needing product, taking time in the morning. I thought, screw it, let’s try that Strickland buzz. How hard could it be?
The Barber Shop Visit
Went down to my usual barber. Now, explaining this was kinda funny. I didn’t want to just say “Give me the Sean Strickland”. Felt a bit weird. So I tried describing it.
- Me: “Just buzz it all off. Like, real short. Use the clippers, maybe a number 1 or even 0.”
- Barber: “Okay, standard buzz cut. Easy.”
- Me: “Yeah, but like… maybe not perfectly neat? You know, just functional.”
He looked at me funny. Like, ‘You want me to do a bad job on purpose?’ I tried showing him a picture on my phone real quick. He just shrugged and said, “Okay, short buzz it is. I only do clean work though.” Fair enough.
Living With It
So he buzzed it all off. Clipper guard number 1, I think. It felt… weird at first. Cold, mostly. My head hadn’t felt the breeze like that in years. Looked in the mirror. Definitely simple. No styling needed, obviously. Just wash and go. That part was awesome.
The good parts:
- Super easy mornings. Rolled out of bed, hair was done.
- Saved money on shampoo, conditioner, gel, whatever.
- Felt kinda liberating, not worrying about messy hair.
The not-so-good parts:
- My head shape isn’t exactly Strickland’s. Some bumps I never knew existed.
- Got cold easily without my usual ‘insulation’.
- It grew back kinda patchy in the first week or two. Looked less ‘intentional buzz’ and more ‘lost a fight with a lawnmower’.
Final Thoughts
So, the Strickland-inspired buzz cut experiment lasted a few weeks. It was definitely an experience. Mostly, it taught me that ‘no fuss’ looks still depend a lot on your head shape and how your hair grows. It wasn’t bad, just maybe not for me long-term. It did make me appreciate the sheer simplicity Strickland seems to go for, though. Just get it done, no messing around. Respect that. But yeah, I think I’ll go back to something with a bit more coverage next time. My scalp gets cold.
