Alright, so I found myself going down a bit of a rabbit hole the other day thinking about college football, specifically that whole Jimbo Fisher situation and how his teams matched up against certain opponents. Vanderbilt popped into my head.

It started pretty simply. I was just reading some stuff online, you know, opinions flying everywhere. Some folks saying one thing, others saying the complete opposite. It gets noisy. So, I thought, okay, let me actually try and figure out what the deal was myself, specifically with the Vanderbilt games when Fisher was at A&M.
My Little Digging Process
First thing I did was just pull up my trusty search engine. Nothing fancy. Started typing in stuff like “Jimbo Fisher Texas A&M Vanderbilt game results” or “Fisher record vs Vanderbilt”.
Then I started sifting through the results. Lots of articles, sure, but I wanted to see the actual game details if I could find them easily.
- I looked for box scores mainly. Wanted to see the final scores, yeah, but also things like total yards, turnovers, time of possession. Sometimes the raw numbers give you a bit more context than just who won or lost.
- Found a couple of game summaries. Read through those to get a feel for the game flow described by people who watched it closely back then.
- I even tried finding some highlight clips. Not full games, mind you, just enough to see some key plays or get a visual sense of how things went down on the field.
What I Noticed (Or Thought I Noticed)
After poking around for a bit, looking at the scores and reading the recaps, it wasn’t like some huge shocking discovery happened. But it did reinforce some things in my mind.
Consistency, or lack thereof, maybe? Sometimes the games seemed closer than maybe the talent levels suggested on paper. That’s football though, right? Especially in the SEC. Vanderbilt might not have had the same star ratings, but they come to play.
It reminded me that just because you’re supposed to win, doesn’t mean it’s automatic. Every team has scholarship players, coaches trying their best. You can’t just roll the ball out there.
This whole little exercise, digging into the past games, kinda reminded me of this project I did a while back. Thought it would be straightforward, mapping out all the steps. Looked simple on the surface. But once I got into the weeds, unexpected problems popped up, things took longer. It’s like that with football games too, I guess. You plan and practice, but weird bounces happen, guys make unexpected plays (good or bad).
So yeah, that was my dive into the Jimbo Fisher-Vanderbilt matchup history. Didn’t uncover any secret formulas or anything. Just spent some time looking at the actual results and it sort of confirmed my feeling that football is unpredictable, and you gotta respect every team you line up against. No easy outs, especially in that conference. That’s just how it is.
