Okay, so I wanted to get into MMA, right? But I was totally clueless about the gear, especially the gloves. I mean, how do you even pick the right size? I hit up the internet, and man, was it a rabbit hole.
First off, I learned that MMA gloves are different from boxing gloves. It’s not just about the weight, it’s about how they fit your hand. Apparently, you gotta measure your hand’s circumference. Sounds easy enough, but where do you even measure?
So, I grabbed a measuring tape and tried to figure it out. I started just wrapping it around my palm, kinda like I was holding a handle. My first measurement was somewhere around 9 inches. Then I found some advice online that said to measure around your palm across the knuckles. Okay, that makes more sense. I did that, and it was closer to 8.5 inches. Which one was right? I had no clue.
The Size Chart Struggle
Then came the size charts. Every site seemed to have a different one! One site said if you’re under 8 inches, go for S/M, and over 8 inches, go for L/XL. Another one had a whole range of ounces, like 8-10 oz for “smaller people” or those with “faster hands.” What does that even mean? I consider myself average, maybe slightly above average if my ego is feeling good, but “fast hands”? I felt a little bit like a boxer, but that might just be from the frustration.
I ended up just guessing and went with a size L, since it’s in the L/XL category and I’m at 8.5 inches. When the gloves arrived, I tried them on. They felt okay, a little snug, but not too tight. I tried hitting my heavy bag a few times, and they seemed to work fine. I do not know whether my measurement is correct, but I still feel a little bit strange.
But honestly, I’m still not 100% sure I got the right size. I guess time will tell. I might need to try a different size later on, or maybe even ask someone at the gym for advice. This whole glove sizing thing is way more complicated than I thought!
My takeaways from this whole mess:
- Measuring your hand for MMA gloves is tricky. Around the palm, across the knuckles, whatever – just pick a method and stick with it, I guess.
- Size charts are confusing as hell. Don’t rely on just one. Maybe average them out or something.
- When in doubt, maybe just go to a real store and try them on. Or find a friend who knows about this stuff.
Anyway, that’s my MMA glove saga. Hope this helps someone out there avoid the same headache I went through!
