Alright, so I’ve been messing around with this golf thing for a while now, and I gotta say, it’s way harder than it looks. I mean, you see these pros on TV, and they make it seem so effortless. But trust me, getting that little white ball to go where you want it to is a real pain in the butt sometimes.
Anyway, I stumbled upon this guy, Sam Bennett. Heard some folks talking about his “unique” swing at the range the other day. So, naturally, I got curious and spent a good chunk of yesterday evening watching videos about him. I went down a bit of a rabbit hole, to be honest. Watched a bunch of his highlights, especially from that Masters tournament last year. Man, that bogey-free round of 68 was something else.
Then I started digging into the mechanics of his swing. Found some videos of a coach, this Craig Hocknull guy, breaking it down. He kept it pretty simple, which I appreciated. My brain can only handle so much information at once, you know?
So I went to the driving range today, all pumped up to try and copy this Sam Bennett swing. Let me tell you, it felt weird. Really weird. I shanked a bunch of balls, topped a few, and probably annoyed the heck out of the guy in the next stall. But I stuck with it, trying to remember what that coach was saying in the video.
- Tried to focus on that unique backswing he’s got.
- Tried to mimic that little pause at the top.
- Tried to not come over the top like I usually do.
After a while, I actually started to hit a few decent shots. Not perfect, mind you, but definitely straighter than usual. It felt like I was getting more distance, too, which was cool.
Experiment Result
I even tried to slow down my pre-shot routine, just to see what that felt like. I can now understand a little bit of what people mentioned about him on the internet – “It needs to become more normal to penalize players for slowness and force…”
Honestly, I’m not sure if I’m going to stick with this Sam Bennett swing thing long-term. It’s definitely different, and it’s going to take a lot more practice to get comfortable with it. But it was a fun experiment, and it definitely gave me something new to think about. Maybe I’ll just incorporate a few elements of his swing into my own. We’ll see.
I’m going to keep messing around with it and see what happens. Maybe I’ll watch some more videos, maybe I’ll just keep hacking away at the range. Who knows, maybe I’ll even surprise myself and actually get good at this game one day.
This is just a start I think. And I need to keep going. Maybe one day I can play like him, although he missed the cut in his first PGA tour. But that’s fine I think.
If you guys have any tips, let me know. I’m always up for trying new things. Especially if it means I can finally stop embarrassing myself on the golf course.
