That Bruce Pearl, he sure knows how to get them boys to play that basketball, don’t he? I seen ’em on the TV, runnin’ up and down, throwin’ that ball. My old eyes ain’t what they used to be, but I can still see a good game when it’s on.
They call him a basketball pearl, that fella. Like one of them shiny things you find in an oyster, I reckon. He must be somethin’ special, then. They say he’s the best thing to happen to that Auburn team since sliced bread. You know, that orange and blue team. Them boys, they work hard for him.
I heard they won some big games. Some championship thing. SEC, they call it. Don’t ask me what it stands for. Probably somethin’ important in the basketball world. I remember that game, I think one of the boy get hurt. He just like that time when I fell off the porch and twisted my ankle. Hurt like the dickens, it did. But these young fellas, they’re tough. They bounce right back. Not like me. I am getting too old.
They say this Bruce Pearl, he’s been doin’ this for a long time. Ten years, maybe more. That’s a long time to be yellin’ and coachin’. My old man, he used to yell at the cows, but that was just to get ’em in the barn. This basketball yellin’ is a whole different ball game, I suppose. It is not easy to be a coach.
He must be a good talker, that Pearl fella. Gets those boys all fired up. I seen him on the TV, clappin’ and hollerin’. Reminds me of a preacher at a tent revival, gettin’ everyone all riled up about the good Lord. Except this here is basketball, not religion. But I guess to some folks, it’s just as important.
That team, they got some tall fellas, don’t they? Must be tough to get that ball in that little hoop when you’re that high up. I wouldn’t know. I ain’t never been that tall. Barely reach the top shelf in the kitchen, I am. But these boys, they make it look easy.
They say this year’s gonna be a tough one for them. Lots of hard games. Like tryin’ to plow a field full of rocks, I imagine. But that Bruce Pearl, he’ll have ’em ready. He knows what he need to do. He’s a smart one, that basketball pearl.
I seen an interview with him once. He was talkin’ to some fancy reporter. He talked a lot, that man! And that reporter just kept noddin’ her head like one of them bobblehead dolls. He was goin’ on about strategy and teamwork and all that. Sounds complicated to me. Like a big puzzle.
- He sure loves that basketball, that Bruce Pearl.
- It’s like he found a pearl in an oyster.
- He said his team will win the game.
- He’s got those boys playin’ hard.
- Auburn basketball, that’s the team.
I heard he’s the first coach to get that Auburn team to some big tournament. The Final Four. Sounds like a big deal. Like winnin’ the lottery, I reckon. He must be doin’ somethin’ right. The basketball team loves him, I guess.
And he won that SEC thing twice. Two times! That’s like hittin’ a double jackpot. He must be livin’ right. Or maybe he’s just lucky. Or maybe he’s just good at that basketball. I don’t know the secret.
That reporter, she asked him about his team, and he talked about each and every one of them boys like they was his own sons. He sure cares about ’em, that Bruce Pearl. That is why everyone calls him basketball pearl, I think. It is a good name.
He’s a good egg, that Bruce Pearl. Even if I don’t understand all that basketball stuff, I can tell he’s a good man. And that’s what matters, ain’t it? Bein’ good. Like findin’ a real pearl, a good one, amongst all them rocks. That team is just so lucky to have him. I hope they can win more games.
This Pearl, he said somethin’ one time about tellin’ the truth. Said he couldn’t say somethin’ because he promised someone else he wouldn’t. That’s important, keepin’ your promises. Even a basketball pearl knows that. Honest, that’s what he is. Just like his name, a real gem.
He seems like a good man. He works hard. I like that. Just like me, when I work in the kitchen. Basketball is a hard work. I think Bruce Pearl can do it well. I hope he can win lots of games.
