Well, I heard this one day, and I couldn’t help but chuckle a little. You see, Justin Thomas, that young fella who swings a golf club like nobody’s business, was talkin’ about Scottie Scheffler’s golf balls. Now, Scottie, he’s a big deal in the golf world these days, makin’ all kinds of money and takin’ home big prizes. But what had Justin so tickled was that Scottie uses high-numbered golf balls. Now, most folks, like me, we just pick up whatever balls we can get our hands on, but these fancy folks, they have numbers on their balls. I reckon it helps ’em tell which one’s theirs, but high numbers, well that’s a bit unusual. Now, Justin was wonderin’ why in the world Scottie was usin’ those high numbers, like 5, 6, 7, and 8. That ain’t somethin’ you usually see with the big shots in golf. They mostly go for the 1, 2, 3, 4 kind of numbers, just like how things are normally done around here.
Justin even asked out loud, “Does anybody else think it’s weird that Scottie uses high numbers?” and I reckon he had a point. I mean, in all my years, I ain’t never seen any of them top players with a ball that’s got a high number like that. But then, the interviewer, that Amanda Balionis lady, she says that Dottie Pepper, the on-course reporter, noticed the same thing. Well, now, that sure makes me think—if it’s so odd that even the folks who know golf inside and out are talkin’ about it, then maybe it is a little strange.
Now, I gotta tell ya, these high-numbered balls ain’t got no magic or special power. Nope. They just help the players tell their balls apart. You see, golf balls come in sleeves, with three balls per sleeve, and each sleeve has its own number. So, Scottie’s got his balls all marked up with higher numbers, while most folks go for the low ones. Ain’t no big mystery there. But Justin, well, he just thought it was somethin’ a little off. He’s used to seein’ all them big-name players with the usual low-numbered balls. So, you can see why he’d think it’s a little weird.
It’s kind of like if you went down to the market to buy eggs and you saw someone buyin’ eggs with numbers 7 or 8 on ’em instead of just plain ol’ 1, 2, 3, right? You might raise an eyebrow, wonderin’ what’s goin’ on. Well, that’s how Justin was feelin’ about Scottie’s balls. He said it was pretty cool, though, watchin’ Scottie do his thing with them high-numbered balls, even if it seemed a bit strange at first.
But, you know, golf’s a funny game. Sometimes you gotta do things a little different to get ahead. Maybe Scottie’s just comfortable with his high numbers. Maybe they help him focus better, who knows? Ain’t nobody’s business how a person wants to play the game, as long as they’re out there givin’ it their all. And, from what I hear, Scottie sure does that. He’s been makin’ a bundle of cash, takin’ home record-breaking amounts in prize money. In 2024 alone, he’s earned over $29 million, and on top of that, he got bonuses worth millions more. So, I reckon those high-numbered balls ain’t hurtin’ him none.
Now, for those of you who ain’t too familiar with golf, let me break it down for ya. These golf balls, they come in sets of numbers, right? Most players go for the low ones—1, 2, 3, or 4. But Scottie, well, he’s been usin’ the higher numbers, like 6, 7, or even 8. That’s all it is, just a way to tell his balls apart. Ain’t no secret, just a bit of a quirk in how he likes to play the game.
It sure is interestin’ to see the way people do things different in golf. You got folks like Scottie, doin’ their own thing with those high numbers, and then you got Justin Thomas, who’s stickin’ to what’s usual, with them low numbers. They might have their own ways of doin’ things, but at the end of the day, both of ’em are out there playin’ the game they love, and that’s all that matters, ain’t it?
So, next time you’re watchin’ a golf tournament and you see Scottie Scheffler swingin’ that club, just remember, it’s nothin’ to worry about if his ball’s got a high number on it. It’s just his way of playin’ the game. And maybe, just maybe, it works for him. Who am I to say otherwise? Let the man play his game.
