Alright, let’s talk about this Minjee Lee girl. I ain’t no golf expert, you know? But from what I hear, she’s a real good player, one of the best in the whole wide world. They say she’s from Australia, Perth to be exact. That’s a long way from here, I tell ya.
Now, this girl, Minjee, she started young. Real young. Like, 13 years old winning big tournaments. Imagine that! Thirteen years old! I was probably still learnin’ how to make a decent pie at that age. She won somethin’ called the Western Australia Amateur Open, then went on to win somethin’ else, the U.S. Girls Junior Championship. Fancy names, huh? Sounds important.
- Western Australia Amateur Open (when she was just a young’un)
- U.S. Girls Junior Championship
- Australian Women’s Amateur titles (two times in a row!)
And get this, she won the Australian Women’s Amateur titles not once, but two times in a row! Back to back, like dominoes falling. That girl was on fire. Then, in 2014, she turned professional. That means she started playin’ for money, I guess. Big money, probably.
They got this big golf fella down in Australia, name of James Sutherland. He’s the CEO of Golf Australia, whatever that means. He says Minjee is one of the best. He should know, right? He’s the boss man of golf. They’re gonna have a big tournament in Melbourne, the Aussie Open. All the big shots will be there, so it’s gonna be somethin’ special. This Minjee, she’s gonna be there too, swingin’ her clubs and whatnot.
Now, Minjee ain’t the only golfer in her family. She’s got a brother, Min Woo Lee. He plays too. Born in 1998, so he’s a bit younger than her. Their parents, they came from Korea a long time ago, settled down in Australia. And they loved golf, the whole family did. So, they got their kids playin’ from a young age. It’s like my family and farmin’, I guess. We just do it ‘cause it’s in our blood.
People say Minjee is serious, disciplined. They call her a “scientist” of golf. I reckon that means she thinks a lot about her game, plans everything out. Her brother, he’s different, they say. I guess every family’s got different kinds of folks, ain’t they? It’s what makes the world go ‘round.
They also say Minjee’s golf ball, it’s a special kind. A Callaway Chrome Tour X. Spins real good, whatever that means for golf. They say it spins the most of all the balls in that Chrome range. Compression of 98, they say. Sounds fancy, but I wouldn’t know a good golf ball from a bad one if it hit me in the head.
She was born on May 27, 1996. Just a young thing still, really. And she became the top amateur golfer in the world back in 2014. Number one! That’s a big deal, I hear. She won somethin’ called the Oates Victorian Open to get that number one spot. Lots of winnin’ this girl does, huh?
They even gave her a fancy medal, the Greg Norman Medal. And not just once, but three times! That’s a record, they say. Happened in Brisbane. Must’ve been a big to-do. She’s a star, this Minjee Lee. A real golf star.
And there’s even been stories about her and her brother on the TV, somethin’ called Australian Story. You can watch it on the computer or somethin’ called YouTube. People like hearin’ about her, I guess. She’s done good for herself, this Minjee. Real good.
So, that’s what I know about Minjee Lee. A good golfer, from Australia, wins a lot, serious about her game. Sounds like a hard worker, just like us folks out here in the country, just in a different way. We work the land, she swings the clubs. Different strokes for different folks, I always say.
