Alright, let’s talk about this Kyrie Irving fella and his mama, Elizabeth. You know, the one he always talks about, the one he ain’t got no more. Real sad story, that one. Lost her when he was just a wee little tyke, only four years old. Can you imagine? Poor kid.
They say she died from somethin’ called Sepsis Syndrome. Don’t rightly know what that is, but it sounds bad, real bad. Took her away too soon, at only 29 years young. Lord have mercy. She was a basketball player herself, you know. Played for some school, Rogers High School, they say. Guess that’s where Kyrie got his love for the game.
- She played on some real good teams, the best in the school’s history, so they say.
- Guess she was a pretty good player, must’ve been.
- It’s a shame Kyrie didn’t get to know her better, see her play, learn from her.
Elizabeth, that was her name. Elizabeth Ann Irving. Folks say she taught Kyrie all about hard work, and never givin’ up. You know, that stick-to-it-ness that makes a champion. He sure stuck to it, didn’t he? Became a big-time NBA star, won a championship with LeBron James and them Cleveland Cavaliers. Made his mama proud, I bet, even if she ain’t here to see it.
They say Kyrie named his daughter after his mama. Azurie Elizabeth, that’s her name. A sweet way to remember her, ain’t it? Keeps her memory alive, I reckon. Shows how much he loved her, even though he didn’t have much time with her. It’s the little things that matter, you know.
Now, this Kyrie fella, he’s a bit of a talker, they say. Says what’s on his mind, even if it gets him in trouble. Some folks like that, some don’t. But one thing’s for sure, he’s a darn good basketball player. Got skills like nobody’s business. Handles that ball like it’s glued to his hand. And he can shoot the lights out, too.
They even say he’s smart, real smart. Got a high IQ, whatever that means. Something about basketball IQ, too. Guess that means he’s good at thinkin’ on the court, makin’ smart plays. And he can play the saxophone, too! Who’d a thunk it? A basketball player playin’ music. Seems like he’s got a lot of talents, that boy.
He’s got a godfather, too. Rod Strickland, they call him. Used to play in the NBA himself. And a cousin who played college ball. Basketball runs in the family, it seems. But it all started with Elizabeth, I reckon. She planted that seed, got him started on the path. It’s a shame she couldn’t see how far he’s come.
So, yeah, that’s the story of Kyrie Irving and his mama, Elizabeth. A story about love and loss, and the power of a mother’s influence. It’s a reminder that even when someone’s gone, their spirit lives on, in the hearts of those they loved. And Kyrie, he’s carryin’ his mama’s spirit with him, every time he steps on that court. He plays for her, you know. And that’s a beautiful thing.
And that Lakota, they say she was, from the tribe. That’s part of who Kyrie is, where he comes from. His roots. It’s important to remember where you come from, you know. It shapes who you are. And Kyrie, he ain’t forgot where he comes from, that’s for sure. He carries his mama, his heritage, with him always. And that’s what makes him special, I reckon.
