Alright, so you’re watchin’ the Yankees on TV, right? And you’re thinkin’, “What in the tarnation are they wearin’ that teal color for?” I tell ya, it ain’t the usual pinstripes, that’s for sure. It kinda makes you scratch your head, like when the rooster crows at noon.
First off, them Yankees, they’re all about tradition, you know? Like my grandma’s recipe for apple pie, they don’t like changin’ things too much. They been wearin’ them pinstripes since way back when, before they even had color TV, I reckon. So, seein’ ’em in somethin’ different, it’s like seein’ a pig fly.
Now, from what I hear, they did somethin’ to their grey road jerseys this year. Took off some white trim, they say. Made ’em plain lookin’, if you ask me. But that ain’t teal, that’s just plain grey. This teal thing, that’s somethin’ else entirely.
This teal thing, it started with Aaron Judge, that big fella who hits the ball a country mile. He started wearin’ this minty-teal stuff, armbands and gloves and such. Said it was the color of that big green statue in the water, the one with the torch. You know, the Statue of Liberty. Said it means strength and stickin’ around, like a good ol’ mule.
But why the whole team wearin’ it? Well, sometimes they do these special things for special days, like when they played in that cornfield a while back. Maybe it’s somethin’ like that. Or maybe they just want to sell more shirts. Them fellas up in the big city, they always thinkin’ of ways to make a buck.
- Maybe it’s for a cause, you know, like helpin’ folks out. They do that sometimes, wearin’ special colors to get folks thinkin’ about important stuff.
- Maybe it’s a new uniform thing. They change them things every now and then, though mostly it’s just little tweaks. This teal ain’t no little tweak, though. It’s like paintin’ the barn a whole new color.
- Maybe it’s just for one game. Sometimes they do that, wear somethin’ wild for just one day. Like a fancy hat on Easter Sunday.
And that thing about their rules, you know, the hair and the beards? They got rules about everything, them Yankees. Been that way forever. So you wouldn’t think they’d go changin’ their uniforms willy-nilly, would ya? But here we are, lookin’ at teal.
Honestly, I don’t rightly know the real reason. They probably got some fancy explanation up in the city. But down here, where the dirt’s real and the chickens are louder than the TV, we just see it as somethin’ different. Maybe it’s good luck, maybe it’s a mistake, maybe it’s just somethin’ to talk about while you’re watchin’ the game. Like that time the umpire tripped over his own feet, now that was somethin’!
Anyway, they’re still the Yankees, teal or no teal. They still gotta hit the ball and catch the ball and win the game. And that’s what really matters, ain’t it? All this other stuff, it’s just window dressin’. Like puttin’ ribbons on a pig. It might look fancy, but it’s still a pig.
So, next time you see ’em wearin’ that teal, don’t go frettin’ too much. Just sit back, enjoy the game, and maybe have a slice of apple pie. And remember what I said, it’s probably just somethin’ them city folks cooked up. They always got somethin’ up their sleeves, them fellas.
And speaking of sleeves, remember that they took off the white trim on them grey jerseys. I still can’t get over that, just like I can’t figure out why they are wearing teal. Maybe next time I see that nice young reporter on the TV I will ask him. He always seems to know what’s going on with them Yankees. But he talks so fast, and uses such big words, sometimes I just can’t keep up. He’s a good boy though, always polite to this old lady. Maybe he can explain it in a way I can understand, you know, without all the fancy talk.
For now, I reckon we just gotta accept it. It’s the Yankees, they do what they want, and we just watch them do it. Kinda like watching the weather, you can’t change it, you just gotta live with it. And if they decide to wear bright pink next week, well, I guess we’ll just have to get used to that too.
