Alright, so listen up, y’all. We gotta talk about this fella, Mike Shildt. Don’t know him from Adam, but they say he’s a big deal in baseball, somethin’ about managin’ a team. Padres, I think they called ’em.
Now, they tell me this Mike guy, he got himself a new job, a fancy one too. They hired him back in November 2023, gave him a two-year deal. Two years! That’s a long time to be bossin’ folks around, I tell ya. But then, just like that, they up and give him another two years! Said they liked what he was doin’, I guess. Now he’s stickin’ around ’til 2027. Must be doin’ somethin’ right, this fella.
- He got hired in November 2023
- Got a two-year deal, then extended it for two more years
- Now he’s manager until 2027
They say the Padres, that’s the team he manages, they did pretty good this year. Won a bunch of games, somethin’ like 93 out of 69. That’s a lot of winnin’, even I can figure that out. But they still didn’t come in first. Second place, they said. Behind some other team, the Dodgers, I think. Folks were real happy with him though, clappin’ and cheerin’ and all that.
This Mike Shildt, he ain’t no spring chicken neither. They say he’s 55 years old. That’s older than my grandson, for sure. But I guess age don’t matter much when you’re tellin’ a bunch of young fellas how to play ball. He’s the 23rd manager in the team’s history, they said. That’s a lot of managers, seems like they go through ’em like water.
Someone told me they had a big to-do when they introduced him. At some place called Petco Park. Sounds fancy. He even told a story about some fella named Peter Seidler, said they were close. Guess this Peter fella was important, maybe owned the team or somethin’. People seemed to like hearin’ about him, clappin’ and all that again. Mike Shildt, he seems like a good talker, got the gift of gab, you know? Like that preacher we used to have down at the church.
And get this, he’s got a wife too. Michelle Segrave, they call her. Been married since March 6th, though they didn’t say what year. Guess even baseball managers gotta have someone to come home to. Probably makes him dinner and washes his socks, just like I used to do for my old man.
Anyways, they keep talkin’ about this Mike Shildt on the TV and in the papers. Seems like he’s a big shot. San Diego Padres, that’s the team he’s with, remember that. They gave him another chance, they said. Guess he must’ve done something good before, even though I ain’t never heard of him ’til now. He’s a manager, they say, and he’s supposed to lead them to victory. Well, I hope he does, for his sake and for them fellas playin’ ball.
Mike Shildt, that’s the name to remember. He’s the manager, and he’s got a job to do. And from what I hear, he’s doin’ a pretty good job of it. Two-year contract, then another two years, that’s what they said. So he’ll be around for a while, tellin’ them fellas what to do and hopin’ they win some games. That’s the long and short of it, as far as I can tell.
