Well now, let me tell ya ’bout this feller, Ben Darmstadt, who’s been making waves in the world of wrestling, and I reckon that’s somethin’ worth talkin’ about. He’s a young man, but don’t let that fool ya – he’s already done a heap of things in the wrestling world that some folks can only dream of. Started out, like many of ‘em, as a bright-eyed Freshman, just lookin’ to make his mark, and boy did he ever! Right out the gate, in 2017, he finished up sixth at the NCAA Championships in the 197-pound class. That’s no small feat, I tell ya. For a first-year feller to stand out like that, well, it’s somethin’ special.
Now, after that, he didn’t slow down none. He kept right at it, gettin’ better each year. I heard he even went on to place high in some other tournaments, like the EIWA Championships. Folks were talkin’ ‘bout him all the time, sayin’ he was a true force on that mat. And then, he was one of them fellers who just kept impressin’, even when he had to jump up in weight classes. They say he moved up to 197 pounds, and wouldn’t ya know, he still managed to go 5-0 at the South Beach Duals, with three pins to his name! I’m tellin’ ya, that boy’s got skill.
But what really got folks chattin’ was when Ben made the big move from Cornell to join up with the Tar Heels over in North Carolina. Just in October 2023, he stepped on board as a coach for the wrestling team. Now, some folks might wonder why he made the switch, but if ya look at the results, you can see he’s done wonders already. First season there and the Tar Heels had their best dual victory count since back in 2019-20. Now that’s what I call makin’ a difference. He’s a coach now, but I reckon his wrestling days ain’t too far behind him.
Now, there’s more to Ben than just his wrestling. He’s also been known to be one of them good leaders, showin’ the young ones the ropes and guidin’ ‘em the right way. They say he’s always willing to lend a hand, even when he’s busy himself. It’s that kind of heart that makes him stand out even more. I reckon that’s why folks are always quick to praise him, not just for his skills but for the way he carries himself, too.
Back in his college days, he was also named Athlete of the Week by BRSN, which is no surprise if ya ask me. All that hard work and dedication’s bound to pay off eventually, and looks like it did. He even helped his team, Cornell, finish second at the 2020 EIWA Championships. Ain’t no slouch in that feller, no sir!
Ben Darmstadt’s rise in wrestling didn’t come easy, but he’s worked hard for every bit of success he’s got. Whether he’s up there on the mat or workin’ with the Tar Heels, he’s showin’ folks what it means to be a true wrestler. And if you ask me, he’s just gettin’ started. Who knows what the future holds for him in this sport, but I’ll bet it’s somethin’ mighty fine.
