Alright, so the other day I was scrolling through my fantasy football league chat, and someone dropped the term “flex.” I’ve been playing fantasy football for a few years, but mostly casually, so I was like, “Wait, what’s everyone talking about?” I had a vague idea, but I wanted to be sure.

So, I started by hitting up Google. Just typed in “what is a flex on fantasy football”. The results were pretty straightforward.
My Understanding of the Flex Position
- Basically, it’s a spot in your starting lineup where you can play a player from a few different positions. Usually, it’s a running back (RB), wide receiver (WR), or tight end (TE).
- It’s not like your dedicated RB, WR, or TE spots. Those are locked in. The flex is, well, flexible.
I was like “Oh, okay, I kinda get it.” But I want to really be sure how to make the best decision.
decided to put it in the pratice.
I opened my fantasy football app (I use ESPN, but it’s probably the same on others) and went to my team page. I looked at my lineup, and sure enough, there it was: “FLEX.”
I started to go through my available players to put them in the flex position, I compared each of the player’s points of the last several weeks.
Then I looked at my upcoming matchup. Who was I playing against? Were they strong against running backs? Weak against wide receivers? That kind of thing.
I also checked the injury reports. No point in flexing a guy who’s questionable to play.

After all that, I made my decision. I picked a wide receiver who had a good matchup and had been on a hot streak. I figured he had a higher ceiling than my other options.
So that’s it. That’s how I finally, truly understood what a flex position is in fantasy football and how to actually use it. It’s all about getting another good player into your lineup, and you gotta weigh your options to make the best choice. Now I can confidently talk about “flex” with my league mates, haha!
