Alright, so I decided to check out the Myakka Head Air Strip. First, I grabbed my old, beat-up map – you know, the kind with actual paper – and tried to find this place. It wasn’t exactly on the main road, let me tell you.

I packed a small bag with some water, snacks, and my camera, figuring I might be out there a while. I also threw in a hat because, Florida sun, you know? Then I jumped in my trusty truck, filled up the tank, and headed out.
Finding the Place
- The drive was… interesting. Lots of bumpy dirt roads and more than a few “Are we there yet?” moments, even though I was alone.
- Finally I see sign, kinda old and rusty and start driving and driving.
- Eventually, I spotted a small, unassuming sign that said “Myakka Head Air Strip.” I almost missed it!
I pulled off the main road onto what could barely be called a path. Seriously, it was more like a suggestion of a road. I bumped and jostled my way along, praying my truck wouldn’t get stuck. It was a slow and steady. Finally I park and check around.
Once I got there, it was pretty quiet. Just a small, grassy strip with a couple of weathered-looking hangars. I walked around, took some pictures, and just soaked in the peacefulness. There was a real sense of history there, like I’d stumbled onto a forgotten piece of the past.
I spent a couple of hours just exploring, imagining what it must have been like back in its heyday. I didn’t see any planes take off or land, but that was okay. The quiet, the solitude, that was kind of the point. I eat and drink, rest for while, and I decided to pack it up and head home.
The drive back was just as bumpy, but I felt good. Like I’d discovered a little secret, a hidden gem. It wasn’t a fancy adventure, but it was real, and it was mine. I got home, uploaded my photos, and thought, “Yeah, that was a good day.”
