Okay, so today I wanted to try out some Muay Thai mitt work. I’ve been watching a lot of fights lately, and those guys make it look so fluid and powerful. I figured, why not give it a shot?

Getting Started
First things first, I needed some mitts. Luckily, I found a used pair online for cheap – score! Then, I roped in my buddy Mark to hold them for me. He’s not a trained fighter or anything, but he’s game for most things, and strong which I thought was great for a beginner like me.
The Actual Workout
- Warm-up: We started with some light jogging and shadow boxing. Just trying to get the blood flowing, you know? Nothing fancy, just moving around and throwing some punches and kicks in the air.
- Basic Punches: We started with jabs and crosses. Mark held the mitts up, and I just focused on hitting them with good form. It felt awkward at first, trying to get the distance and timing right. My shoulders started burning pretty quick!
- Adding Hooks: Next, we threw in some hooks. These felt even weirder, trying to get that rotation and power from my hips. Mark kept reminding me to keep my guard up, which was tough when I was focusing so hard on hitting the mitts.
- Kicks: We moved on to roundhouse kicks. Man, these were tough! I’m not the most flexible person, so getting my leg up high enough and hitting the mitt with the right part of my shin was a challenge. I definitely pulled a muscle a little bit, not gonna lie.
- Combinations: We tried putting it all together with some simple combinations, like jab-cross-hook, or jab-cross-kick. This was where it got really tiring. My arms felt like lead, and my legs were shaking.
- “Cool-down”: We finished up by me just sitting on the floor because I was super tired.
My Takeaways
Honestly, it was way harder than it looks. I have a whole new respect for Muay Thai fighters. It’s not just about hitting hard; it’s about technique, timing, and endurance and I think I need more practice to get good at all three.
My arms and legs are gonna be sore tomorrow, but it was a fun workout. I definitely want to try it again, maybe with a proper coach next time to help me with my form. Or at least find someone who knows how to hold mitts properly, sorry Mark!
It’s a good challenge, and I felt like I got a solid workout. Plus, it’s just kind of fun to punch and kick things, even if it’s just a pair of mitts.
