Alright, so, let me tell you about this “Craig Stammen Classic” thing I got myself into. Honestly, I didn’t even know who Craig Stammen was before all this. But I found out he’s a baseball pitcher, and apparently, he hosts a charity golf tournament every year. Sounds fancy, right?
So, a buddy of mine, he’s way into golf, asks me if I want to join this tournament. Me? I’m no golfer. I think the last time I swung a club, I nearly took out a window. But he convinced me, said it was for a good cause, and, you know, there would be beer. I’m in!
First thing’s first, I needed some clubs. I didn’t even own a set! I borrowed some from my uncle – these old, dusty things that probably hadn’t seen the light of day in a decade. But hey, they were free. I figured it’s not a beauty contest. It’s golf, you hit the ball, you chase it, repeat.
Next, I needed some golf clothes. I didn’t want to show up looking like I just rolled out of bed. I went to a sports store, ended up with some pretty loud plaid pants, a bright polo shirt, and a hat that made me look like I was about to go fishing. Not sure if it was “golf attire,” but it would do.
The day of the tournament arrived. I showed up early, feeling like a total imposter. Everyone else seemed so…professional. They had these shiny, new clubs and were doing all sorts of fancy stretches. I just stood there, awkwardly clutching my borrowed clubs, hoping I didn’t embarrass myself too much.
We teed off. My first swing…well, let’s just say the ball didn’t go very far. It took a weird bounce and landed in a sand trap. Great start. The rest of the day was a blur of missed shots, lost balls, and me trying to figure out how to use all these different clubs.
- Hole 1: Sand trap.
- Hole 2: Lost in the woods.
- Hole 3: Almost hit a bird.
- Hole 4: …and so on.
I was terrible. I mean, really, really bad. But you know what? I had a blast! Everyone was super nice, even though I was clearly the worst golfer there. We laughed a lot, drank some beers, and just enjoyed the day. It was for charity and I got to support a good cause. The money raised will go to a program to fight against child abuse. How cool is that?
The Aftermath
At the end of the day, I didn’t win any prizes, obviously. But I did get a nice sunburn and a newfound appreciation for the game of golf. It’s a lot harder than it looks! And I also learned that it’s okay to be bad at something, as long as you’re having fun and doing it for a good reason.
Would I do it again? Absolutely! Maybe next year I’ll even take some lessons beforehand. Or maybe not. Either way, I’m looking forward to the next Craig Stammen Classic. It’s a fun event, and supporting a good cause is always a good idea. Oh, and they gave me a free t-shirt. Score!
