Okay, so, I gotta talk about this whole “Cody Rhodes’ dad” thing. I got really into it and, let me tell you, it turned into a bit of a rabbit hole. I started off just wanting to know a little bit more about Cody Rhodes, the wrestler. You know, “The American Nightmare.” I always thought that was a cool nickname.
So I dug in a bit, and guess what? Turns out this whole “American Nightmare” thing wasn’t even a WWE creation. Nope, he used it back when he debuted in NJPW in 2016. And before that, after leaving WWE, he was just going by “Cody”. Man, the guy’s been around! He’s wrestled everywhere – TNA, ROH, you name it. Even did Wrestle Kingdom. That’s huge!
But here’s where it got interesting for me. I found out that Cody Rhodes’ dad is Dusty Rhodes. And this guy, Dusty, he was a legend in his own right. His full name was Virgil Runnels Jr., but he went by the name “Dusty Rhodes.” He was also a wrestler, and not just any wrestler, but a big-time star back in the day. He even worked as a booker and trainer.
They called Dusty “The American Dream.” And you know what’s really cool? It seems like Cody’s whole “American Nightmare” thing is kind of a play on his dad’s nickname. It’s like he’s taking his dad’s legacy and turning it on its head. I just thought that was super fascinating.
- The American Dream: This was Dusty Rhodes’ nickname. He was known as a star wrestler who represented the everyday American.
- The American Nightmare: This is Cody Rhodes’ nickname. It seems to be a play on his dad’s nickname, which I find pretty cool.
- Polka Dot Gear: I also found out Cody tried reclaiming his dad’s signature polka dot gear. I haven’t seen him wear it yet, but I’m keeping an eye out.
And then I discovered that Cody has a half-brother, Dustin Rhodes, who’s also a wrestler. It’s like wrestling is in their blood. They even worked together with their dad as their manager at one point. A real family affair!
I just wanted to learn a bit about Cody Rhodes, and now I’m knee-deep in this whole wrestling family history. It’s pretty amazing how much history and legacy there is in professional wrestling. It’s way more than just guys in tights throwing each other around. It’s been a fun little project, I should say.
Things I Learned

So yeah, that’s my little deep dive into Cody Rhodes and his dad. Hope you found it as interesting as I did! I’ll definitely be keeping up with Cody’s career and see if he brings back any more of his dad’s iconic stuff. Wrestling is full of surprises, so we’ll see!
